Become a Volunteer Advocate
The Rape Crisis Center is always looking for volunteers to help with our 24-hour crisis line to assist those who have experienced sexual assault, and who would like to give back to their community in a very rewarding and selfless way. We provide all the necessary training, as well as other opportunities to get involved such as outreach events, fundraisers and administrative support.
Volunteering is also a great way to develop a strong support system, meet likeminded people and make a difference. To join our cause read the position description below.
Volunteer Advocate Description
- To offer support, crisis intervention,and advocacy services to victims of sexual assault in the hospital setting.
- To receive crisis calls from the 24 hour/365 day a year crisis line.
Duties
- Commit to cover at least two shifts per month
- Must be able to be reached by phone during scheduled shifts
- Must be able to respond in a very timely manner to a hospital call
- Must be able to handle crisis line calls
- Must return all paperwork of activity to the Rape Crisis Center the following working morning
- Must be able to find a replacement if you are unable to cover your shift
Qualifications
- Must attend the required Rape Crisis Center training (25 hours)
- Must be at least eighteen years of age
- Must be able to work effectively with victims, police and medical staff
- Must be flexible to handle a wide variety of unexpected situations
- Must adhere to the policies and procedures of the Rape Crisis Center
Time Commitment
- Must commit to at least two shifts per month for at least a six month commitment after completion of training
- On call shifts are Monday through Sunday 5pm to 8am Saturdays, Sundays and holidays also have an 8am to 5pm shift.
Requirements
- Must be at least eighteen years of age
- Must have a valid driver’s license and provide own transportation to respond quickly to any of the seven hospitals within Horry and Georgetown Counties
